Netflix’s Next Royal Gamble: Is a Harry & Meghan California Story Coming?

Netflix’s Next Royal Gamble: Is a Harry & Meghan California Story Coming?

The relationship between Netflix and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continues to attract speculation, with a new claim suggesting that the streaming giant could be considering another project centered on the Sussexes.

According to commentary in the latest video, Netflix is not necessarily planning to follow Harry and Meghan around with cameras for a new reality-style production. Instead, the more intriguing possibility is reportedly a dramatized or documentary-style exploration of the couple’s years in California.

That distinction is important because the claim remains unconfirmed.

The video argues that Netflix has already accumulated substantial insight into the Sussexes through their previous projects, including Harry & Meghan, Heart of Invictus and With Love, Meghan. From this perspective, the California years could provide plenty of material for another production without requiring the couple to participate directly.

The idea is certainly commercially interesting.

Harry and Meghan’s move away from the United Kingdom generated enormous global attention. Their decision to step back from senior royal duties, relocate to North America and establish an independent life in California became one of the defining stories of the modern monarchy.

Their Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan subsequently became a major talking point, giving viewers the couple’s perspective on their relationship, royal life and departure from the institution.

But their Netflix relationship has evolved considerably since then.

The video claims that Meghan’s lifestyle project encountered significant difficulties behind the scenes, particularly around organisation, product availability and commercial execution. It argues that the absence of a fully developed product ecosystem around the launch made it harder for Netflix to assess the project's wider commercial potential.

Those claims, however, are presented as insider commentary rather than independently verified facts.

What is more firmly established is that Netflix has experimented with different forms of Sussex-related programming. The couple's original deal with the company produced several projects, while Meghan's lifestyle brand and television work have developed separately over time.

That creates an obvious question: does Netflix still see Harry and Meghan as a valuable long-term entertainment property?

The answer may be more complicated than either enthusiastic supporters or critics suggest.

From a business perspective, Netflix does not necessarily need a close personal relationship with a celebrity to find value in their story. A high-profile royal controversy can remain commercially attractive long after the original events occurred.

The Crown demonstrated how powerful the royal family's story can be as entertainment. Although the series was a fictionalised drama rather than a documentary, its success showed that audiences around the world remain fascinated by the private lives, conflicts and institutional pressures surrounding the monarchy.

A California-era Sussex production could potentially exploit a similar fascination.

There would be plenty of narrative territory: the couple's transition to life in the United States, their commercial ventures, their relationships with the royal family, their philanthropic projects and the continuing debate surrounding their place within the wider monarchy.

However, there is a major difference between having an interesting story and having a confirmed production.

At present, the suggestion that Netflix is actively developing a new Harry and Meghan project should therefore be treated cautiously. No confirmed title, release date, production announcement or official Netflix statement has been presented in the material discussed here.

The same caution applies to claims that Netflix has abandoned Meghan or decided that the Sussexes are “null and void.” Entertainment companies routinely reassess projects, partnerships and commercial strategies. A change in programming does not necessarily indicate personal hostility or a dramatic falling-out.

There is also an interesting strategic possibility.

If Netflix were to revisit the Sussex story, it could potentially do so without presenting the couple as the sole narrators. A production looking back at the California years could include journalists, historians, former insiders and other perspectives, creating a broader examination of what happened after the couple left royal duties.

That would make the project fundamentally different from a production designed primarily around Harry and Meghan's own account.

For the Sussexes, such a project could present both an opportunity and a challenge. More screen time would provide another platform to explain their version of events, but a production controlled by a major entertainment company could also introduce perspectives they would not necessarily control.

And that may be the most fascinating part of the speculation.

If Netflix really does revisit the California chapter, who gets to tell the story?

Harry and Meghan?

Netflix?

Independent commentators?

Or a mixture of voices looking back at the extraordinary years following their departure from royal life?

For now, there is no confirmed answer.

The latest claims should therefore be viewed as entertainment-industry speculation rather than a confirmed Netflix announcement. But the possibility itself highlights something that has remained true throughout the Sussex era: their story continues to generate enormous interest, even years after the most dramatic events occurred.

Whether Netflix decides to reopen that chapter remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: if the cameras ever do return, the California years would provide no shortage of material.
