Meghan Markle’s Fashion Choices Draw Comparisons With Catherine’s Established Royal Style

Meghan Markle’s fashion choices have repeatedly been compared with those of Catherine, Princess of Wales, with royal blue, pearls and maternity clothing among the styles that have attracted particular attention.

The latest discussion focuses on the visual similarities between the wardrobes of the two women and how their respective approaches to royal dressing developed over time.

Royal blue is one of the most noticeable examples. Catherine has frequently appeared in the shade at official engagements, where it has become associated with her polished and traditional public image. Meghan has also worn variations of royal blue on several occasions, leading fashion observers and royal commentators to draw comparisons between the two wardrobes.

The similarity is not necessarily unusual. Blue is a widely used color for formal events because it photographs well, works across different seasons and can fit both traditional and contemporary styling. Royal women are also regularly expected to balance personal fashion preferences with the formality of official appearances.

Nevertheless, repeated appearances in similar shades naturally create comparisons, particularly when two highly recognizable members of the same family are being photographed at major public events.

Pearls represent another recurring point of comparison.

Catherine has incorporated pearls into her wardrobe on numerous occasions, including pieces associated with the late Queen Elizabeth II and traditional royal jewelry. Pearl earrings, necklaces and other classic designs have consequently become part of the broader visual language associated with her public appearances.

Meghan has also worn pearl jewelry, including more prominent designs, particularly during formal royal occasions. The similarity has encouraged some commentators to examine whether the jewelry choices represented a broader shift in Meghan’s approach to royal dressing after she joined the family.

However, the use of pearls is hardly exclusive to either woman. Pearls have been a major part of formal fashion for generations and remain a conventional choice for ceremonies, weddings and diplomatic occasions. Similar jewelry therefore does not, by itself, demonstrate deliberate imitation.

The comparisons became particularly visible around royal family events, where both women were photographed in carefully selected outfits and accessories. Such appearances naturally create opportunities for fashion publications and social media users to compare silhouettes, colors, jewelry and styling choices.

Maternity fashion provides another area of comparison.

Catherine’s pregnancy wardrobes received considerable international attention. Her appearances frequently featured structured coats, coat dresses, coordinated accessories and footwear designed to maintain a formal appearance throughout her pregnancies.

When Meghan became pregnant, her maternity wardrobe was similarly scrutinized. Unlike Catherine, Meghan entered royal life with an established public fashion identity from her acting career and previous appearances. Her maternity style therefore combined elements associated with her existing preferences with the expectations surrounding official royal engagements.

This difference is significant. Catherine and Meghan did not enter public life with identical fashion backgrounds, and each developed her own approach to clothing.

Catherine’s style has generally evolved around classic tailoring, traditional silhouettes and references to royal history. Meghan has often incorporated more contemporary cuts and minimalist styling, although her official appearances have also included conventional formalwear.

The constant comparison between the two demonstrates how closely royal fashion is analyzed. Every outfit can become part of a larger narrative about personality, status and identity.

It is also important to distinguish observation from interpretation. Two people wearing similar colors, jewelry or silhouettes does not automatically mean that one is attempting to replicate the other. Fashion trends, designers, royal protocol and the demands of formal events can all lead to similar choices.

What remains undeniable is that Catherine and Meghan have developed two of the most closely followed royal wardrobes of the modern era. Their appearances continue to generate extensive discussion, while individual outfits are frequently revisited whenever one of them chooses a style associated with the other.

As both women maintain distinct public profiles, future appearances will likely continue to invite comparisons. Whether those similarities reflect shared royal conventions, overlapping fashion trends or individual preference is ultimately more difficult to establish from clothing alone.
