Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Face New Questions as Separate Branding Strategy Resurfaces

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are once again at the center of public debate as commentators question whether their joint brand as a couple is still working.

The discussion follows renewed claims that Meghan may be preparing to focus more heavily on her own public identity while Harry continues to face criticism over his role within the Sussex brand.

For years, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have presented themselves as a united team. Their public projects, media appearances, interviews, tours, and commercial ventures have often been built around the idea of Harry and Meghan as a powerful couple with a shared mission.

However, critics now argue that this image has become increasingly difficult to maintain.

Recent commentary suggests that Meghan may see solo appearances as a better opportunity to rebuild her profile. Her appearance in Geneva, where she attended an event without Harry, has fueled speculation that she may be testing whether she can command attention on her own.

The challenge is that the results have been mixed. Reports and online reactions claimed that the turnout was underwhelming, and critics quickly used the event as evidence that Meghan’s solo appeal may not be as strong as expected.

At the same time, Harry’s own public image remains complicated. Once viewed as one of the most popular younger royals, he has faced years of criticism following the couple’s interviews, Netflix projects, legal battles, and repeated public disputes involving the royal family.

This has created a difficult branding problem for the Sussexes. Together, critics say they appear overexposed. Separately, both face questions about whether they can generate lasting public interest without relying on royal controversy.

The phrase “professional separation” has repeatedly appeared in commentary about the couple. It suggests that Harry and Meghan may pursue more individual projects rather than always appearing together as a pair.

This idea has surfaced several times in recent years. Each time, it has been framed as a possible reset for the couple’s public image. But critics argue that the repeated cycle of rebranding, relaunching, and repositioning has created fatigue among audiences.

For Meghan, the issue is whether she can create a strong independent identity beyond royal conflict and lifestyle branding. Her business efforts, including As Ever, have attracted attention, but also heavy criticism over pricing, presentation, and brand direction.

For Harry, the issue is whether he can focus on causes such as Invictus without being pulled back into media battles and royal family disputes.

The larger problem is that both still rely heavily on the royal connection. Even when they attempt to move into lifestyle, entertainment, charity, or public speaking, much of the public interest remains tied to their relationship with the monarchy.

That makes true independence difficult.

If Meghan does continue pursuing more solo opportunities, she will need to show that she can attract audiences without Harry and without constant reference to royal drama. If Harry does the same, he will need to rebuild trust around service, veterans, and charitable work.

For now, the debate shows that the Sussex brand remains unstable. Their supporters see reinvention. Their critics see repetition.

Either way, the question remains the same: can Harry and Meghan build lasting public identities apart from each other, or has their brand become trapped in the same cycle of controversy and attempted reset?
