Royal Staff Review Returns to Focus as Meghan Workplace Allegations and Palace Transparency Questions Resurface

The Palace bullying review linked to Meghan Markle has returned to public discussion because it still sits at the intersection of three issues that continue to shape the modern monarchy: staff welfare, institutional credibility, and the long aftermath of the Sussex departure.

The controversy first gained major public traction in 2021 when reports emerged that Jason Knauf, then a senior communications aide, had raised concerns in 2018 about Meghan’s treatment of staff. Published accounts of the email said Knauf alleged that two personal assistants had been driven out of the household and that another staff member’s confidence had been undermined. Meghan’s representatives strongly denied the claims and described the allegations as part of a damaging smear effort.

Buckingham Palace responded by launching a review, but the form of that review later became central to the story itself. When officials addressed the matter in 2022, they made clear that the investigation had focused on how Palace staff handled the concerns rather than publicly litigating each underlying allegation. The Palace also said changes had been made to internal policies and procedures, while declining to publish the review’s details out of confidentiality concerns.

That left the monarchy with a familiar problem. By confirming that a process had taken place, the institution acknowledged the seriousness of the issue. By withholding the findings, it also guaranteed that speculation would continue. As a result, the matter has remained part of the wider Sussex narrative, resurfacing whenever questions arise about staff turnover, internal culture, or the monarchy’s willingness to confront damaging stories directly.

The issue also matters because of timing. Prince William, as heir to the throne, is increasingly viewed through the lens of future leadership rather than only present duty. In that context, unresolved institutional matters acquire a larger meaning. Questions about conduct, governance, and discipline are no longer interpreted only as historical episodes from the final years of Harry and Meghan’s working royal life. They are also read as indicators of what kind of standards a future reign may want to project.

That does not mean there is public evidence that William is preparing to release the review. No official source reviewed here says that. What the public record does show is that the Palace completed its process, implemented HR-related changes, and kept the substance private. That gap between process and disclosure is precisely why the issue still carries weight. It remains one of those royal matters where the existence of a sealed answer can become almost as powerful as the answer itself.

The story gained another layer in 2025 when Jason Knauf spoke publicly in a documentary interview and said he would not change anything about having raised the concerns. His comments brought the original dispute back into view and reminded observers that the episode is not merely archival. It still influences how some former aides, commentators, and royal followers interpret the breakdown between the Sussex household and the rest of the institution.

In practical terms, the review remains a closed Palace matter. In symbolic terms, it has become part of a wider test facing the monarchy in the post-Elizabeth era: whether the institution can persuade the public that it protects staff, handles complaints seriously, and learns from internal failures without always relying on silence as its final shield.

That is why the story continues to return. It is not simply about one report, one duchess, or one period of Palace turbulence. It is about how a centuries-old institution manages modern expectations around workplace conduct, accountability, and trust. As long as the findings remain unpublished, the review will continue to function as both a private administrative file and a very public measure of royal credibility.
